Chennai Smashers beat Mumbai Rockets to clinch Premier Badminton League Season 2
After fourteen days of action, we had finally arrived on the last day of the league matches of the Premier Badminton League Season2. A high-octane action kept the spectators enthralled in the final between Chennai Smashers and Mumbai Rockets here on Saturday.
The first game was mixed doubles between Nipitphon/Zieba of Rockets and Chris Adcock/Gabby Adcock of Smashers. The Smashers had a narrow lead of 6-5 at the break of the opening game. It went as close as one would have expected. Both the teams made 9-9. The Smashers took the opening game by a narrow win 11-9. The Rockets started the second set strongly against the Adcocks with a one point lead at the break of the second set. The Adcocks attempted a comeback & won the second set by 11-8. The Adcocks pair won the closely contested game in straight sets by 11-9, 11-6.
The second match was women singles between world number 6 Sindhu of Smashers & world number 3, Sung Ji Hyun of Rockets. Sindhu went into the break with a lead of 6-4. Sindhu delivered terrific cross-court smashes. Sung Ji was also fighting back and pushing shuttle to the back of court making hard to Sindhu but nothing was stopping her. Sindhu won the first game by 11-8. Both the shuttlers were sweating it out by playing intense rallies to win the match for their team but Sindhu won the game and ended at 11-8, 11-8. An impressive victory by Sindhu.
The third game was men’s doubles between Kolding/ C Adcock of Smashers. and Lee Yong Dae/ Nipitphonp of Rockets. An early lead by Lee Yong Dae/ Nipitphonp in the first set. Kolding/ C Adcock made a lot of unforced errors which helped Lee Yong Dae/ Nipitphonp to win the set by 12-10. The Rockets completely dominated the set and won the match in straight sets 12-10, 11-6.
The fourth match was P Kashyap of Smashers and Prannoy of Mumbai Rockets. The first set saw a good start by both the players with Prannoy having a lead of one point at the break. Prannoy maintained the lead and won the set. Kashyap started the second set strongly by playing some terrific net play. Prannoy continued his winning run & remains unbeaten this season.11-4,8-11,11-8
