PBL Auctions- 2016

After the enormous success of the inaugural Premier Badminton League in January 2016, the organizers were planning the second edition of one of the most paid badminton leagues in the world.

The Auction for the same was conducted on November 9 , 2016.

Six teams came into the auction with a purse of 1.93 Crore INR each and a new concept in auction called ‘Right to retain’ where the teams could retain 3 players from the previous season after matching the highest bid in the auction.

There were 15 Icon players for the first session of Auction who are the top players in the badminton world, main attractions being Olympic medalist Carolina Marin and P V Sindhu. Indian stars like Srikanth Kidambi, H S Prannoy , Sai Praneeth etc.

New teams, new players, title of the best team to be won, all the teams went into the auction well prepared and ready to fight out the psychological battle and battle of strategies before the real war in the badminton court.

Saina Nehwal went unsold in the first round and was retained by Awadhe Warriors for 33 lakhs which is seriously low after being given close to 1 crore INR in the first auction.

After being second in the last season, Mumbai have their eyes on the prize as they acquired Lee Yong Dae and Sung Ji Hyun as their icon players. They retained Indian star H S Prannoy to lead this talented division of players.

Delhi Acers did a great job in getting the star player of last season Vladimir Ivanov and also got his partner Ivan Sozonov who are in good form. They are all set to defend their title with Jan O Jorgenson and  Son wan Ho leading the team.

Hyderabad Hunters always go for the big shots at the auction, last year it was Lee Chong Wei and this time it is Carolina Marin. They spent the highest amount for a player at 61.5 lakhs, just 50000 short of the limit a team can spent on a player.

After the disappointing bottom finish last season Bnegaluru are planning to give all the teams a run for their money as they retained the service of Ashwini Ponnappa and also procured Victor Axelson.

Chennai Smashers retained the Indian star P V Sindhu and has also acquired services of ‘The Adcocks’ and Tommy Sugiarto who was part of Delhi Acers title finish last season. They have a team of youth and experience with Kashyap and Tanongsak in the Singles and Mads Pielder Kolding in the doubles department.

Surprisingly Mathias Boe , Joachim Fischer Nielson , Aparna Balan, P C Thulasi, Koo Keat Kien and many talented players were not selected by any teams. The list of Unsold players features some of the biggest names in the Badminton community.
