Saina wins again to take the Warriors to semifinals
The third day of the Bangalore leg saw Awadhe Warriors who whitewashed Delhi Acers in their last match took on Bengaluru Blasters.
The first match was the men’s singles contest between Vincent of Awadhe Warriors and Sourabh Verma of Bengaluru Blasters. An early lead by Vincent in the first set but Sourabh leveled up from 5-10 to 9-10 and won the set by 13-11. Both the players showed his class by playing some spectacular game. The second set went completely neck-to-neck. Sourabh had a superb defense and won the match in straight sets 13-11, 11-7.
The second game was mixed doubles between Issara/Savitree of Warriors and Sung Hyun/Reddy of Blasters. The Thai’s had an early lead of 4-0 in the first set and made 6-4 at the break of the opening game. The warriors extend the lead to 8-4 but Blasters had a superb comeback. Warriors took the opening game by a narrow win 11-9. Both the team started the second set strongly but Blasters won the second set by 11-4. The third set saw an early lead of 6-2 from Issara/Savitree. The defensive game from the Thair pair gave them a victory 11-9, 4-11, 11-5.
The third game was supposed to be an interesting game of Mens Singles between Srikanth Kidambi of Warriors & V Axelsen of Blasters. The first set started with an exciting note where the set some intense rallies. Srikanth took the opening game by 11-9. Axelsen was under pressure in the second set and lost to Srikanth in straight sets 11-9 & 11-9. By the win of this game, Warriors succeeded in going to the semifinals.
The fourth match was a trump match for Warriors, playing Olympics medallist Saina Nehwal of Warriors against World number 19, Cheung Ngan Yi of Blasters. In the first set, Saina had an early lead but Cheung Ngan gave a good fight and came back to win the game by 11-9. Saina started the second set strongly. Cheung Ngan made unforced errors which helped Saina to win the set. In the third set, Saina delivered beautiful cross court smashes. Saina won this game by 9-11, 11-5, 11-5 against a fighter Cheung Ngan.
The fifth game was men’s doubles between Shem Goh/Kido of Warriors & Sung Hyun Ko/Yoo Yeon Seong of Blasters. This was the trump match for Blasters. Shem Goh/Kido went into the break with a lead of 6-5 and further won the set by 11-6. Warriors got a lead of 6-3 at the break of the second set, went on to 9-6 but Blasters had a comeback and turn the table. Blasters started the third set strongly with a lead of 6-2. Warriors duo were playing hard but Blasters were the ones who got the last laugh. The score read out as 6-11, 11-9, 11-6.
